Is current white western guilt culture a problem in modern day society?

Do you feel significant degrees of guilt as a westerner?

Does white western guilt culture inhibit and distort critical thinking?

My video response below:

Shame culture is not a modern invention. Shame is an age old tool  of control. It has a primary dependence on guilt. White western guilt culture is born out of this. It’s very specific. It is the guilt that Western citizens feel due to western colonization, slavery, military invasions and genocides.

A degree of guilt is perfectly acceptable, and arguably even required. It’s a question of degree. It can be taken too far and it is being taken too far.

Pascal Bruckner (in Tyranny of Guilt) stated “bourgeois Bolshevism is widespread. The rebel used to be a man of the people who wanted to shock the bourgeois. Now, he is a bourgeois, who wants to shock the people”.  It’s not only about shock, its about manipulating guilt and emotive control.

White western guilt culture is at an unproductive and dysfunctional point. It aids in diluting critical thinking. It’s become a sibling to identity politics and victim-hood fetish. They foster the following:

-Permanent one dimensional victim-hood of certain groups.

-An allowance for perceived minority/victim-hood groups to get away with certain beliefs and actions. Excusing them from responsibilities, moral constraints and the law.

The combination of white western guilt culture, identity politics and victim-hood fetish has been utilized by the following

-Western global political elite.

-Western minority groups.

-White western regressive liberals (far leftists).

-Extremist individuals, groups and governments in the East.

Avoiding guilt altogether could be seen as an avoidance of mistakes that cost others. It’s important to understand and acknowledge the mistakes made by Colonial nations. Being aware of history and showing empathy for the generations of persecuted indigenous people is extremely important. At what point should guilt stop growing? When does sympathy become a problem? When reason and critical thought evaporates.

There is a seduction that occurs that encourages people to take on large doses of guilt that is not theirs. It blinds them to the wider context.

The West has a great deal to answer for: Wars, invasions, religious persecution, slavery, imperialism, fascism, Nazism, and communism.  However, the West does not get enough credit for defeating most of the above and working towards rectifying the issues.

The West has been able to come to terms with many of its past infractions. I stress that it is by no means perfect.

Western invasions still continue to this day and they are unacceptable. Some nations have made more inroads into correcting their past mistakes than others. Some are lagging behind. For example, Australia still has a long way to go regarding it’s colonialism and treatment of Aboriginals.

Patrons of white western guilt culture revel in western slavery even though it ended over 150 years ago. However, modern day slavery seems to have no effect on them.  Slavery, human trafficking, child labor and forced labor are rampant in the East.

Foundations  Study shows the following:

-China- 2.9 million in slavery.

-India- 14 million in slavery.

-Africa- 20 million in slavery. Includes the nations of  Mauritania , Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Nigeria.

-Arabia- Over 1 million in slavery. Saudi Arabia, UAE,  Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, and Iraq.

Other nations involved in modern day slavery: South and North Korea, Vietnam, Turkey, Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan.

White western guilt culture  allows for the blame of Islamic based extremism (including acts of terrorism) to be  placed on the west. This has also created an ideology that has created two rigid prisms:

-Christianity and Judaism are power majority oppressors.

– Islam is the oppressed victim.

These prisms dictate the intense criticism and scrutiny placed on the first two religions in the West and the free pass given to the third. The free pass is granted solely due to perceived consomate victim status.  I am for equal and fair scrutiny on all three and calling out the issues with all of them.

The overly guilt ridden are not able to view these religions in all contexts. Only through a narrow Western lense. Their scope can’t extend to the East. If it could they would see that Christianity and Judaism is often the minority and is abused and persecuted daily at the hands of power majority Islamic nations. All throughout the Middle East, Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia.

They are more than willing to remember the Christian extremist bombing of an Abortion clinic in Chicago in 1984 because it plays it into their ideals of Christian power oppressors. Yet they remain silent or willfully ignorant on matters relating to Islamism or Islamic extremist incidences, whether they take place in France or Egypt.

Guilt ridden westerners general response is “We bombed and invaded their countries.  It’s a response to Western colonialism and invasion”  This only makes an attempt to address Islamic based terrorism. Terrorism is only one part of the problem.

The West certainly has inflamed Islamic extremism via its invasions. It has utilized Islamic extremism in order for it’s own agenda ie ISIS, Al Qaeda. Regardless, the West did not invent Islamic extremism. It’s an age old ideology that draws from the doctrines, the Haddith (Mohammed’s words) and Sharia Law. The three combined are responsible for countless cases of death, abuse and persecution in the East.

White western guilt culture makes allowances or ignore these facts. Their idea is to not upset extremists due to worthless bourgeois guilt. If you do upset them they will feel  grieved enough to retaliate.

When the West reversed the genocide of East Timor by the Indonesian army they felt grieved enough to attack tourists in Bali as punishment. Western democracy allows for satire of the Prophet. This upset them so they felt the need to attack cartoonists in Paris and Copenhagen. You tell them that they cannot throw acid in the faces of unveiled women in Karachi or Nigeria. This upsets them so you have made an enemy.

You must stay silent and allow them to do what they want. White western guilt culture has made a perfect bedfellow for this extremist ideology.

When westerners free themselves from the excess shackles of guilt, they will become enlightened.

Woody Allen once said “guilt is petty bourgeois crap”. Maybe there’s some truth to that.
