I was happy when Andrew( from Authentic Edge) contacted me. He wanted to have a discussion about social issues that concern him. Andrew is a development and lifestyle coach specializing in helping people become the best versions of themselves.
Feminism was on the agenda. I have covered third wave feminism on my website previously and we have touched on it in general on the various Old Simo social media platforms. It’s a big topic and not an easy subject to discuss.
Some might dismiss the idea of two men discussing feminism but I think that’s a mistake. Men have as much right to discuss feminism as women do. We have as much stake in feminism as women do.
I subscribe to the fundamental belief for the existence of feminism. I believe in equal rights for women. The first wave and second wave were extremely important but we seem to have lost our way with third wave feminism. The current climate of gender and identity politics has allowed third wave to have no spearhead or central focus.
It’s an individual style movement that began in the early 1990s. It aims to focus on queer, transgender women. Intersectionality and non western women’s issues. The individual style approach has lead to a regression in the movement.
I believe equality is achieved with the sexes working together, not tearing each other apart. Equality at this point in time should be about collaboration. The current movement isolates men instead of enticing them to join the movement.
This is why I think it’s important for men to have these discussions with other men and women. Everyone needs to get their thoughts and feelings out without being attacked or unfairly judged.
Andrew and I weren’t expecting to chat for an hour but the conversation was so interesting, that it just kept on going. We hope you find it as interesting and thought provoking as we did!
