I staunchly support the thousands of women striking and taking to the streets in protest against proposed total bans on abortions. I am hoping that there were men active in the protest against this absurd legislation. It was astounding to see such a regressive step taken by a European country. Though, It does make sense on some levels. We do seem to be in a new wave state of global conservatism.
I don’t identify myself as right or left wing. There are elements of conservatism and liberalism that I believe in and adhere to. It just so happens that I fiercely object to this particular brand of ultra conservatism. I’m a libertarian and I advocate the maximization of autonomy and the belief in free will and choice.
Pro abortion rights all the way!!!
The stranglehold of the extreme Polish right and of the Catholic church are the obvious driving forces behind this proposal. Women found to have had abortions will be punished with a five year jail term. Doctors who have assisted abortions will also face jail time. If it goes through, Poland will be the third country (after Malta and The Vatican) in Europe to be so restrictive.
In Australia the abortion laws vary state to state. In New South Wales, Northern Territory, South Australia, and Queensland abortion is legal only up until a certain point. For example, it’s legal up to 14 weeks in the Northern Territory and up to 22 weeks in Queensland. There is no time limit in NSW but abortion becomes a criminal offence in the above states if at least one doctor does not give permission for the procedure. An abortion will only be granted if it’s determined that a woman’s physical and mental health is at stake due to the pregnancy.
I certainly don’t advocate abortion as a form of contraception. I am a big supporter of safe sex practices, which assists in avoiding abortion. However, I strongly believe that these limitations and bans on abortion procedures are an invasion of a woman’s civil rights. No government or religious institution should have any say in what a woman does with her body. Men make the majority of these decisions. They have absolutely no idea what it is like to carry an unwanted pregnancy. It has always been about politicizing and owning a woman’s body.
Women that don’t not want to carry a pregnancy to term because they are not financially equipped, too young or not at the right stage of their lives is good enough reason for me. Let’s not forget cases of conception resulting from incest or rape.
Nearly all abortions take place within the first trimester when fetuses are completely dependent on the mother. Therefore, the fetus cannot be regarded as a separate entity. I don’t see the fetus as an independent human being that can be “murdered”. Modern abortion is a very safe procedure, in particular during the first trimester which heavily reduces any risks. Abortion can create psychological stress but more so prior to the abortion. There is very little evidence to prove that post abortion syndrome is a significant issue.
If this Polish abortion law goes through I fear that it will only increase black market abortions. They will cause mass physical and psychological damage to women who should have the right to safe and legitimate procedures. The dark days of back yard and ‘do it yourself’ coat hanger abortions should never return.
I believe that Socrates had it right when he said “sometimes its better to have never been born”. He was a man of logic and rationality. Let’s ensure that logical and rational abortion services continue with as few limitations as possible.
