What are your thoughts on an the Canadian anti-Islamophobia motion?

Is it necessary or is it regressive and an assault on free speech?

The Canadian anti-Islamophobia motion was initiated by a petition started by Samer Mazjoub. He is the President of the Canadian Muslim forum. It was submitted to parliament with over  70,000 signatures. The petition intended on convincing the government to make certain changes in discrimination legislation. The text in the petition was as follows:

“Recently a small number of extremist individuals have conducted terrorist activities while claiming to speak for the religion of Islam. Their actions have been used as a pretext for a notable rise of anti-Muslim sentiments in Canada; and these violent individuals do not reflect in any way the values or the teachings of the religion of Islam. In fact, they misrepresent the religion. We categorically reject all their activities. They in no way represent the religion, the beliefs and the desire of Muslims to co-exist in peace with all peoples of the world. We, the undersigned, Citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to join us in recognising that extremist individuals do not represent the religion of Islam, and in condemning all forms of Islamophobia”.

In late October  parliament approved of a Canadian anti-Islamophobic motion. At this point it’s a motion and it has no legal effect unless it’s made into a bill. What I find alarming about this process so far is that there has been no discussion on what Islamophobia is and how anti-Islamophobia will defined and regulated. The motion did not receive any mainstream media coverage. This is not only fascinating, but suspicious. The Canadian public have not been informed. Why?

This motion has been welcomed by Canadian Muslim groups and Western liberals.  They believe that a Canadian anti-Islamophobia motion is the beginning of non partisan, symbolic and positive movement. Muslims are a marginalised minority and need further protection. It will aid against several Islamophobic based attacks including verbal abuse, vandalism of mosques, burning of Qaran and the public distribution of anti Muslim posters.

Canada already has laws that protect individuals against instances of verbal threatening assault, harassment, bodily harm and vandalism. Why go an extra step for one religion only? If they are to pass a Canadian anti-Islamophobia motion they should also pass motions against Christianphobia, anti- Semitism and Hinduphobia. Shouldn’t all religion receive the same legal protection?

I am against this motion.  It’s dangerous due to its lack of detail and definition and I suspect that there won’t be much further definition at the bill stage. If that’s the case, it will be a very easy way for certain Muslim individuals and groups and regressive Western liberals to shut down any critical thought and challenge aimed at Muslims and Islam. Canadian citizens have every right to apply critical thought, challenge and scrutiny to Islamic doctrines, Islamic law (Sharia), practises and culture that stem from Islam. The Prophet Mohammed should not be exempt either. Free speech and expression needs to be protected and this motion is a step towards threatening these fundamentals.

A proposed law like this makes it easy to accuse Charlie Hedbo of Islamophobia. It makes it easy to accuse people like Christopher Hitchens, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Sam Harris and Salman Rushdie of Islamophobia.

The most problematic religion in the world today is Islam. A minority fall into the category of terrorists, jihadists, jihadist sympathizers, and individuals who partake and/or support Sharia law that violates human rights. It estimated to be around 15% of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslim population. This equates to 240,000,000 and it is an issue despite its minority status. I fear that loose and non descriptive motions like this could only aid this minority’s dangerous and culturally incompatible agendas. It also gives their silly Western regressive liberal protectors cause to continue their blind over emotive nonsense. I shall keep an eagle’s eye on the progress of this motion.
