Thoughts on celebrity declarations to move away from the US if Donald Trump was elected?
Why have they gone quiet now?
What was the motivation for their statements?
Check out my video response below:

US celebrities came out in droves making all kinds of big statements regarding the potential outcome of the US presidency. Many actors, singers, and comedians stated that they would move away from the United States if Donald Trump was elected President. He was elected President and, as far as I can see, these celebrities have not packed their bags and moved. Most of them have gone from being extremely vocal to being extremely quiet. Consider the following statements below:
“I would definitely move if Trump won”- Bryan Cranston
“If that motherfucker becomes president, I’m moving my black ass to South Africa”- Samuel L Jackson
“I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will. I know a lovely place in Vancouver”- Lena Dunham
“I’m moving to Jupiter” – Cher
“I am moving if he is President. I don’t say things that I don’t mean”- Miley Cyrus
“I’m either coming to Australia if you’ll let me in, or Canada”- Barbara Streisand
“I will move to Spain or somewhere. It’s beyond my comprehension if Trump won. It’s just too crazy”- Amy Schumer
“I vow to move back to Canada”- Neve Campbell
Post election, various media outlets attempted to contact the representatives of the above celebrities for a comment on the election and their relocation plans. The representatives of the following celebrities refused to respond:
When Samuel L Jackson was questioned on his travel plans post Trump win, he chose to tweet his intentions to stay in the US. “When you learn the actual difference between my actual opinion and a Kimmel Skit…Maybe we can talk. Till then, I’m barbed wired up your asses !!!(sic)”
Amy Schumer now claims that she was “joking” when she expressed her passionate need to escape a Trump America.
There are plenty more celebrities who made similar claims and I think that they are all full of shit. I don’t believe that any of them were serious about leaving the US. Celebrities enjoy “performing” and this extends into statements that they make, supposedly as themselves, in public. Their disdain for Trump and his future administration is not being questioned. I want to know why they feel the need to make such big bold statements that they don’t truly mean.
Perhaps it’s all part of an entertainer/celebrity personality. They have a flair for theatrics and drama. Maybe they just want to reinforce their stance against Donald Trump by making the ultimate statement, declaring a self imposed US exile in the name of politics and justice. It all sounds rather admirable but it really means nothing if there’s no true intent behind it.
Celebrities have the money and the means to make a speedy getaway. They can literally choose anywhere in the world to relocate to and buy an amazing property up front with no finance. So why don’t they? I think it’s because they live in minority bubbles. Their fame and wealth isolates them to the point that they are really out of touch with the rest of the population. Perhaps, they also make these type of statements for strategic business purposes. They hope that these grand declarations will gain them new fans and further endear them to their current fan base.
Election results make no difference to the lives of celebrities. Their minority bubble of wealth and privilege protects them. No democratically elected government is going to alter their lifestyles. If the US government was overthrown by fascists, celebrities and the mega wealthy who opposed the regime would be the first ones to leave the country. They would be able to do this due to their position of privilege. Why would they do this? Because a fascist regime that they did not support would be the only case of a government truly affecting their lives.
I’m all for celebrities voicing their concerns. I actually enjoy and admire politically outspoken celebrities. Many come to mind that have actually made a difference in their words and their actions: Paul Newman, Harry Belafonte, Sean Penn, George Clooney, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Glenda Jackson, Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Fonda, and Melina Mercouri.
I neither appreciate or respect superfluous statements from anyone, let alone celebrities. My advice to them: PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS. Logically, there is nothing stopping you……
